About PCAE Family Literacy

History

The Family Literacy Program has been helping families in Tucson since 1991. The program has grown from three original sites to the current ten sites.

The Six Components of Family Literacy

Parents are the first and best teachers of their own children. Families can learn much more when they learn together. In this program, you and your family can go to school together and progress toward your goals for the future.

Families participate in this program 4-5 hours every morning, four days a week, for the entire school year. There are six components in the Family Literacy Program. Families must participate in each component.

Parents and Children Together (PACT)

Children learn by playing, and their parents are their best teachers. Because of this, every day at least a half hour is dedicated to playing with our children. Each parent spends the majority of the time playing with his/her own child. The children decide what they want to do, and direct the play. This time is very important to focus on the parent-child relationship.

Parent Time (PT)

For at least two hours per week, we have Parent Time. We sit in a circle, and together we discuss various topics to get to know ourselves better and support each other. Topics for Parent Time workshops can include children's discipline, self-esteem, how to solve problems, health, nutrition, etc.

Adult Education

For eight to ten hours each week, you will learn English, prepare for your GED test, and learn how to use computers. This is a participatory class: the students work together with the teacher to choose the topics to study and students cooperate and learn together.

Early Childhood Education

In the preschool, your child will prepare for kindergarten. Through play, the children will learn new skills and develop the skills that they have. Children will have the opportunity to learn pre-literacy skills, songs, dances, computers, how to get along well with others, and much more.

Vocational Time

For about two hours per week, each participant will volunteer in a school. It is very important that parents take an active role in the public schools. The goal of this part of the program is that parents feel more comfortable in the public schools and prepare themselves to support their own children when they enter school. You can help children in classrooms, or gain vocational skills in other areas of the school.

Home Visits

Several times during the year, the teachers will talk with each family individually to see how they are doing in the program.  Some visits will be at home, and others will be at the school or another location, before or after class.  We will talk about what the teachers have observed about the progress of the family, and the family will have the opportunity to ask questions or make suggestions.
