Level IV - Function 1
Infers, summarizes and reports.

Supporting Grammar
Reported speech; tag questions; embedded questions

Class Activity 1: In pairs, students tell each other something interesting that happened to them recently. Then 2 pairs form and make 2 different pairs and ask each other, eg. "What did Zulema say?" "She said that she had gone to Las Vegas."

Computer Activity 1: Newspaper Articles This is the Arizona Daily Star, our local newspaper. You might want to use the web site of your local newspaper. Students go into the archives, choose an article that quotes people and summarize it in Microsoft Word, using reported speech where appropriate. Eg. Mr Brown said, "I left my house at 8am and made sure that the door was locked." Reported speech: Mr. Brown said that he had left his house at 8am and had made sure that the door was locked.

Reported Speech Quiz Click on Quiz Center. Scroll down to" Medium." Click on "Change to Reported Speech" Try another Reported Speech quiz.

Class Activity 2: Students who want to tell their stories about why they left their homeland and what it's like to live in the U.S.A. What they miss most about their countries; what funny things have happened to them. Groups of students then summarize the stories, using tag questions for clarification, eg. "You said you came 6 months ago, didn't you?"

Computer Activity 2: Immigrants' stories In Microsoft Word, students list what the immigrants like or dislike about the U.S.A. and what they miss about their countries. Can students infer anything about how the immigrants feel from their writing, eg. homesick, angry, wistful, etc?

Computer Activity 3: Make a crossword using vocabulary from this function.

Class Activity 4: Role play embedded questions relevant to different locations post office, airport, bank eg. Can you tell me where the post office is please? Do you know how long it takes to get there?

Computer Activity 4: Students practice embedded questions through on-line dictation (Sentence 8.)
